Training of Graduate and Post-Graduate Students

Undoubtly one of the most important (if not the most important) products of university research are the students. It is this crop of new minds that will determine our future as a nation, expecially in the areas of high technology. I believe that we should be judged on how well we train students (as judged by what they do after leaving), not just on how many Phys. Rev. Letters we publish.

I have listed the Ph.d students who have graduated from Penn with me as either their only advisor or coadvisor. These students have come from three departments; Physics, Chemistry and Material Science and Engineering. Roughly 50% of them are working in the private sector, 20% for government laboratories and 30% are in universities.
