Astronomy Program

Public Viewing Calendar/Special Programs

Friday Nights on the roof! For information on the department's public astronomy viewing schedule, as well as special programs, visit the Teachers' Resource Distribution Center Web site. Paul Lewis (aka Captain Comet) is Director of Observing Programs, Outreach in Astronomy, and The Teachers' Resource Distribution Center. For more detailed information about the astronomy program or times for special events, contact Mr. Lewis at 865-974-7815 or send e-mail to gplewis@utk.edu.

The Astronomy Minor

UT students who wish to earn an undergraduate minor in astronomy must take one year of Introductory Astronomy, Astrophysics (Astronomy 411), Special Topics in Astronomy--3 hours (Astronomy 490), Mechanics (Physics 311-312), and Modern Optics (Physics 421). The University of Tennessee does not currently offer a major in astronomy.

Astronomy Observing Program for Undergraduate Students

Students may participate in voluntary observing sessions to earn extra credit for their lecture course or lab. Solar and night sky observations are provided four-to-six times each week and are weather dependent. An alternative session is offered for students in lieu of night sky observations due to inclement weather.

Educational Outreach/Resources for Educators

Public and private schools, as well as special interest groups, are invited to request astronomy programs. The department can provide slide talks, video programs, telescope observations and hands-on demonstrations. Teachers may request written materials as study guides to be introduced in the classroom prior to a visit. An important component of the astronomy outreach program is the Teachers' Resource Distribution Center, which provides a wealth of information for teachers.
