About the Workshop

The Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics of the American Physical Society, The University of Tennessee, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory invite high school physics and physical science teachers to a free, day-long Educators’ Day Workshop, which will be presented on Tuesday, May 16 in connection with the annual DAMOP meeting in Knoxville, May 16 through 20, 2006.

Workshop goals are to introduce teachers to areas of current physics research, expose teachers to novel hands-on inquiry-centered activities, and allow teachers to meet and interact with working physicists. Our workshop presenters are physicists who are passionate about physics education, and include: 1997 Nobel Laureate Dr. William Phillips; nationally acclaimed “Football Physics” presenter, Dr. Timothy Gay; the author of the popular textbook, “How Things Work”, Dr. Lou Bloomfield; and hands-on workshop presenters Dr. Ed Lee of the American Physical Society and Dr. Jim Nelson of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

The workshop is sponsored by DAMOP and is free to participating high school physics and physical science teachers, but advance registration is required because space is limited to approximately 40 participants. Support for substitute teachers will be arranged for pre-registered Tennessee participants. Some travel assistance is also available to Tennessee teachers needing to travel in excess of 40 one-way miles to Knoxville. See the financial assistance section for further information on substitute and travel support.
