Nuclear Astrophysics/Nuclear Structure
I use nuclear reactions to study the structure of nuclei, mostly to understand nucleosynthetic processes that occur in the cosmos. My current primary focus is around the doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn. This region is important as the nuclear shell structure influences the path of the rapid neutron capture (r-) process, which is believed to occur in type II supernovae explosions. Other projects I'm working on include studying resonant reactions in light neutron-deficient nuclei, important in nova nucleosynthesis and X-ray bursts. My other nuclear structure interests are in the light neutron-rich region where exotic behavior has been observed. A new 10Be beam available at the Holifield Facility at ORNL is allowing studies in this region.
