How to Apply

Prospective graduate students must apply directly to the University of Tennessee Office of Graduate and International Admissions and separately to the Department of Physics and Astronomy for assistantships.

Part I: Complete Admission Requirements for
the University of Tennessee Graduate School:

  • A completed graduate school application and a non-refundable application fee of $35.

  • One official transcript of undergraduate and any previously completed graduate work. The Graduate School requires a minimum grade-point average of 2.7 out of a possible 4.0, or a 3.0 during the senior year of undergraduate study. Applicants with previous graduate work must have a grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4-point scale or equivalent on all graduate work.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based test, a 550 on the paper-based test, or an 80 for the Internet-based test. The TOEFL is required for students whose native language is not English. The score must be no more than two years old from the requested date of entry. Official scores (not copies) are required and must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to the University of Tennessee. Applicants who have received a degree from an accredited U.S. institution in the past two years are exempt from the TOEFL requirement. (See the UT Admission Guide for International Students for more information.)

  • The Graduate Record Examination (GRE), although not required for admission to the Physics Graduate Program, is strongly encouraged. Official GRE scores are to be sent directly from the testing agency to the Graduate School. Test information is available from the ETS.

  • Additional items of interest to international students:

    • For international students, the graduate admission process must be started by the following dates (Updated as of 1/13/2004):

      • For Summer admission: October 15

    • An international student must have an equivalent 4-year Bachelor's degree with at least a B average on all previous coursework and a B+ on all previous graduate work. On various grading scales, this corresponds to:

      • 14 on a 20-point scale
      • 80.0 from Taiwanese institutions
      • 1st Class or Division from Indian institutions
      • Upper 2nd Class Honors on various British systems
      • If graduating from a U.S. institution, the minimum is the same as that for domestic students.

    • Transcripts must be official or attested university records, with certified translations if the records are not in English. Notarized copies will not be accepted.

    • Documented evidence of financial resources sufficient to support the student for 12 months of study is required. After receiving the admission application and $35 fee, the Office of Graduate Admissions and Records will mail a financial form to the applicant.
