Our Graduate Program

Geared Toward the Individual

At the University of Tennessee, we've changed our program to meet new challenges and educational demands in physics. Our graduate program lets students choose an individual master's or Ph.D. program to prepare them for a life in private industry, teaching, or research. Students gain a solid foundation in physics fundamentals but also enjoy the freedom to follow questions that intrigue them scientifically. New approaches in our graduate studies program allow students to complete their degrees within a shorter timeframe without compromising our commitment to excellent physics instruction.

Our research program, one of the strongest at the University, includes studies ranging from DNA structure to recreating the Big Bang to understanding the atomic arrangements of surfaces. Our campus is not limited to real estate in Knoxville, but also includes research facilities at nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a host of other research centers throughout the world (at Stanford, Brookhaven National Lab, CRYRING in Stockholm, and ISIS in England, just to name a few). Graduate students are important partners in University physics research, teaming up with a distinguished faculty that includes two University-ORNL Distinguished Scientists, the University's Lincoln Chair of Excellence, and eight University-ORNL Joint Faculty Professors.
