The University-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Connection
The physics department has strong ties with Oak Ridge National Laboratory
that go back more than half a century. The Manhattan Project transformed
the University of Tennessee with an influx of scientists and engineers
and the University's connection to ORNL has grown ever since, particularly
in physics. The Science Alliance,
a University-ORNL Center of Excellence, has set up distinguished professorships
and joint institutes that attract outstanding researchers and students
to our programs. The Spallation Neutron Source
under construction at ORNL and the related Joint
Institute for Neutron Sciences will provide new opportunities for
University physicists (recent hires include two neutron scientists) to
expand the relationship further. Dr. Lee Riedinger, a physics professor
and former department head, is the Deputy Director for Science and Technology
at ORNL (an
article in Tennessee Alumnus outlines the UT-ORNL management
strategy).
