Heavenly Music

October 7, 2005

No matter that they were born in different centuries, an ocean apart, to pursue different professions. Gustav Holst would have liked Paul Lewis. Biographer Ian Lace wrote that the English composer of such disparate works as “Onward, Christian Soldiers” and “Bring us in Good Ale” was a man who “rejoiced in ideas he found fantastic or humorous. He enjoyed a good laugh.” He would have fit right in with Mr. Lewis, UT’s expert on all things astronomical. As it turns out, the two will meet, in a fashion, on October 12. That evening members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will visit the Farragut Library to offer an informal sampling of Holst’s famous work “The Planets,” with Mr. Lewis giving a short introduction. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. and is part of the KSO’s Books, Bach and Beyond Concert Preview series. The orchestra will perform the piece in full concert October 20-21.
