| Introduction
The University of Tennessee Physics Department developed this
page specifically for international students interested in an undergraduate
exchange experience with our program. Currently, UT enjoys a
bilateral exchange program with the University of Oslo in Norway, but
we hope that any undergraduate student from outside the U.S. will find
the information here helpful. Incoming exchange students can get more
detailed information on various application procedures from UT’s
Programs Abroad Office.
Undergraduate Physics
Program
The
physics department at the University of Tennessee provides an excellent,
yet flexible, learning environment for undergraduate majors. Our students
can choose from two different degree options (physics or engineering physics)
and three concentrations (academic, applied, and general). Small classes
offer students personal attention from a nationally-recognized faculty.
Research opportunities with faculty members—including joint faculty
members at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory—offer
our students first-hand experience in professional physics collaborations.
The department also provides
summer research fellowships
for undergraduate students through the UT-ORNL Science Alliance.
The Society of Physics Students
at UT is among the largest and most active in the United States. They’ve
undertaken an ambitious research and outreach project called TECOP to
study cosmic ray showers. They’ve also sponsored many a movie night,
a football (American) cheering squad, and departmental picnics.

The University of Tennessee
The
University of Tennessee is the oldest and largest public higher institution
in Tennessee, tracing its beginnings to the founding of Blount College
in Knoxville in 1794—two years before Tennessee became a state.
The university spent $203.3 million on research last year and, in partnership
with the Battelle research organization, manages the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory for the United States Department of Energy.
Combined,
the Knoxville (flagship) campus, Health Science Center, and Space Institute
offer 809 degrees ranging from the bachelor’s level to doctorate.
UT has an enrollment of 27,300 students and employs 10,000 faculty and
staff members. The university
also has a student organization
for nearly every interest; from fencing to fly fishing, and is home to
the perpetual championship contender Volunteer Football and Lady Vol basketball
teams.

Knoxville and East
Tennessee
Knoxville
is nestled in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and
enjoys tremendous natural beauty and a temperate climate. Numerous area
lakes, parks, and greenways lend themselves to outdoor recreation. Knoxville’s
Old City is home to great music, and every summer local businesses sponsor
free concerts on Market Square downtown. Other cultural highlights are
the Knoxville Opera, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, and the Knoxville
Museum of Art, to name a few.
The
city has a population of about 175,000 people, with a total of
380,000 in Knox County. One third of the United States population is within
500 miles of Knoxville.
