A Message from the Department Head

Nobel-Prize Winner Visits

Dr. William D. Phillips, 1997 Nobel Laureate in Physics, delivered the departmental colloquium on September 11. He spoke on "Matter Waves Optics with Bose-Einstein Condensates." Dr. Phillips is a member of the Atomic Physics Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light.

It's Physics Time in Tennessee

Department Launches New Video Series at Neyland Stadium

Tennessee football fans got lessons in trajectories, force, and gravity this football season thanks to the introduction of "Football Physics," a series of 60-second videos that explain the science of the gridiron to the Big Orange faithful. Dr. Soren Sorensen and Dr. Marianne Breinig took the lead in developing the videos with the help of Barry Rice and Gary Wyant from the UT Athletic Department. The clips, shown during home football games on the stadium's Jumbotron, are designed to illustrate how the laws of physics impact everything from passes and punts to tackles and sports medicine. They also serve as a useful tool to tie together academics and athletics while entertaining a huge audience of Tennessee fans. Dr. Breinig has put together a corresponding Web site at http://footballphysics.utk.edu/ to be updated as the project progresses. Professor Bill Bugg got into the football physics action as well, though not via the Jumbotron. He explained the "Fizzicks of Football" to Metro Pulse reporter Jesse Fox Mayshark in the paper's August 31 edition.
