Dr. Gene Ray was busy this fall, making television appearances and explaining the role of his company, The Titan Corporation, in combating terrorism. Dr. Ray earned a master's degree in physics and a Ph.D. in theoretical physics (1965) from the University of Tennessee. During an October 29 interview with NBC's "Today Show," Dr. Ray explained that Titan will provide electron beam systems to sanitize mail to combat the threat of anthrax contamination. The work is sponsored through a subcontract with Titan subsidiary SureBeam. The SureBeam technology uses high-energy electron beams to sterilize medical equipment and irradiate food products. Although Dr. Ray said on the news program that "anthrax takes more energy to kill," than E. coli or other bacteria, the company's technology can be modified to irradiate letters and packages. The U.S. Postal Service has purchased eight turnkey systems for approximately $40 million with an option to purchase 12 additional systems. Dr. Ray and other Titan representatives visited the New York Stock Exchange in early November, where they rang The Opening Bell. Dr. Ray is the Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Titan Corp., which creates, builds and launches technology-based businesses. Titan is headquartered in San Diego.
