The Rocket Man

Paul Lewis, Director of Astronomy Outreach and the Teachers Resource Distribution Center (TRDC), taught fourth through sixth graders the finer points of rocket making during Rockets! at Kids U, June 4-6. He also taught Starship Exploration June 11-15. Kids U is a University summer program that offers school kids a wide range of short classes on the UT campus. Click here for more pictures of Kids U!

Alumni Online

The physics department has added a new section to our Web site for alumni (http://www.phys.utk.edu/alumni.htm). Included are an online information form you can use to send information about yourself, as well as the first entries of an online alumni directory. All physics graduates are encouraged to visit the site to let us know where you are and what you’re up to. There’s also an alumni news section we would love to expand with the accomplishments of our graduates. You can also send information to: Catherine Longmire, Department of Physics and Astronomy, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN 37996-1200 [cal@utk.edu].

Faculty News

Dr. Ted Barnes has been invited to give the conference summary talk at HADRON2001, the major international conference on hadron physics. Dr. Barnes will also serve on the conference program committee. The meeting will be in Protvino, Russia, August 25-September 1.

Dr. Marianne Breinig was recognized with an Excellence in Teaching Award at the University’s annual honors banquet on April 11.

Three physics faculty members were among the 42 winners of the 2001 Science Alliance Faculty Awards. They were Dr. Bill Bugg, Dr. Robert Compton, and Dr. Jon Levin. A complete list is available online at http://research.utk.edu/scialli/awards.htm.

Dr. Lali Chatterjee was featured in the May 11 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education for her views on narrative-style textbooks. Dr. Chatterjee has written two such books, Muonic Rhapsody and The Exotic Lifestyles of Subatomic Particles.

Dr. Robert Compton, Dr. Mike Guidry and Dr. Marianne Breinig have won grants through UT’s President’s Initiatives to Improve Teaching, Research and Service. These grants (totalling $40 million) were set aside to start small centers and other initiatives to improve academic programs. Dr. Compton won a five-year grant to develop a competitive chemical physics program. Dr. Breinig and Dr. Guidry won a four-year grant for advanced educational technology.

Staff News

Two members of the machine shop were recognized with University Service Awards this spring. Rick Huffstetler has been with the University for 20 years. Randy McMillan has been with UT for 15 years.

Congratulations to office assistant Linda Robinson, who graduated with a B.A. in political science in May.

Student News

Our May 2001 physics graduates include bachelor’s recipients Thomas Gadfort, Robert Mahurin, Richard Manley and Wesley Robertson. Anatoli Melechko and Jay Sullivan both graduated with Ph.Ds.

Alumni News

Dr. John H. Cantrell (Ph.D., 1976) won the 2000 Chinese Academy of Sciences First Prize in Natural Sciences for “scanning electron acoustic microscopy of advanced organic materials.” Dr. Cantrell is a Senior Materials Physicist at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

Society of Physics Students Spring Picnic

When the April 21 physics picnic was over, the undergraduate students had avenged their earlier losses in the department’s spring classic: the annual softball game. While the faculty and graduate students teamed up and threatened to steal victory once more, the Kids came back to win in the seventh inning by a score of 12 to 11. No doubt a revence match will convent on the diamond at Clark Center Park again next year. More picnic news and photos are available here.
